The sustainability conversation in fashion tends to focus on materials. Organic cotton. Recycled fibres. Deadstock fabric.
All of that matters. But it’s not the whole picture.
Where waste actually starts
Some of the most significant waste in fashion production happens before a single garment is cut. Inefficient pattern layouts waste fabric at the marker stage. Poor grading decisions lead to excess sampling when the fit isn’t right. Returns pile up when garments don’t fit the way they should.
None of this shows up in the materials story. But it’s waste all the same.
A garment made from sustainable materials that doesn’t fit properly and gets returned or thrown away after a few wears isn’t sustainable. It’s just expensive.
The technical case for sustainability
Pattern efficiency is one of the biggest levers a brand has when it comes to reducing waste. Small improvements in how patterns are laid and graded add up significantly across a full production run. At scale, the difference is meaningful, both financially and environmentally.
Beyond fabric waste, a technically well developed product is simply less likely to be returned, replaced, or discarded. Longevity is built in at the development stage, not the retail stage.
What genuinely sustainable production looks like
It means reducing waste at the pattern and marker stage. It means getting the fit right before committing to production so sampling doesn’t spiral. It means engineering durability into the garment from the beginning.
These aren’t difficult things. They’re just things that require the right technical foundations to be in place.
So what does this mean for the industry?
Sustainability in fashion needs a broader conversation. Materials matter. But so does everything that happens before the fabric is cut. The brands that are genuinely serious about reducing their environmental impact will eventually have to look at the technical stage. The waste is there. The tools to reduce it are there. It just requires the will to look in the right places.
